Long before the first words were ever inked onto papyrus, human beings were carving circles, spirals, zigzags, triangles, chevrons and repeating motifs into stone, bone, pottery and the earth itself.

Before we could write our stories, we were drawing them.

These were the first attempts to express somethings that felt too important, too fundamental, to leave unrecorded.

Across art, architecture, philosophy and spiritual traditions, geometry has helped people express ideas that words alone struggle to contain.

Unity.
Balance.
Interconnectedness.
Harmony.

For many early philosophers and mathematicians, geometry offered a way to contemplate life’s greatest mysteries: the hidden order amongst nature, the origins of creation, our place within the Universe, and our relationship with the Divine.

But perhaps our fascination with geometry goes deeper than philosophy or belief. Perhaps there is something instinctive about our connection to these symbols.

After all, we recognise shapes before we have words for them.

Before a child can even say the word “circle,” they can recognise one, hold it in their hands and match it to the space where it belongs.

From our earliest moments, we are learning to organise an overwhelming amount of sensory information into meaningful patterns.

We look for repetition.
We recognise symmetry.
We notice when something is out of place.

Our brains our pattern-seeking machines. Because a brain that can organise chaos into meaningful patterns had an advantage. Chaos demands constant vigilance; pattern allows the mind to rest.

Perhaps that’s part of the reason geometric forms can feel so satisfying to look at.

Why the symmetry of a mandala can draw the eye inward.
Why repeating patterns can become absorbing and meditative.

Why we can lose ourselves for a moment in the repeating branches of a tree against the sky, the gentle circles rippling across still water, or the harmony of a beautiful piece of music.

🌀The word geometry comes from the Greek geo, meaning earth, and metron, meaning measure.

🌀So sacred geometry literally means: the sacred measurement of the earth.

🌀It is the study of the deeper order within the universe. The patterns and symbols behind all life. The blueprint through which energy manifests from spirit into physical form to create everything that is. Including us. 

🌀For we are built from the same geometric language that sacred forms express. The same circles, spirals, symmetry, branching and repeating forms we observe in nature can also be found within the human body, which is precisely why these symbols communicate so directly with the human energy system.

🌀Each shape carries its own quality of energy flow, balance, and intention. Each pattern is a vibrational signature; a specific quality of balance and harmony that the energy field can recognise, respond to, and align with.

🌀When we consciously work with these forms, they can become more than something beautiful to look at. They become tools for focusing awareness, exploring balance and deepening our connection with ourselves and the world around us.

I’ve always been intrigued by these symbols. But my curiosity really deepened when a number of students on our Crystal Healing course started asking me about the geometric grid templates we use.

🔺And does the geometry itself play a role in the energetic work we’re doing?

Those questions sent me into the world of Sacred Geometry. 

The more I explored, the more I realised that I’d actually been working with many of these sacred shapes for years without fully understanding the geometry behind them.

Of course, as a Reiki practitioner, symbolism has always been an important part of my practice.

We work with the Reiki symbols. We visualise beautiful fields of healing and protective energy. We use intention, movement and imagery to focus the mind and channel energy across time and space.

In other words, we already understand that a simple symbol can hold energetic significance far beyond the lines we see on the page.

So when I began exploring Sacred Geometry more deeply, it felt surprisingly familiar.

It wasn’t like discovering something completely separate from Reiki or energy healing. It felt more like discovering another language for something I had already been experiencing for years.

Circles, spirals, triangles and interlocking grids and expanding forms suddenly weren’t just beautiful patterns.They were vibrational tools. Doorways into something deeper.

Those initials questions about why we use the crystals grids the way we do, eventually became the inspiration behind the Sacred Geometry Certification Programme here at the RHA.

These shapes and symbols offer a beautiful way of thinking about healing: not as fixing something, but as returning to balance.
