What Is Reiki Healing? Everything you Need to Know [Introduction]
What is Reiki Healing? A Simple Introduction to Reiki
Reiki is an ancient form of hands-on healing that harnesses Ki energy to promote deep relaxation and healing
There is a non-physical ubiquitous and universal energy that gives life to every living organism. For many thousands of years, we have known of this energy and have sought to develop ways to harness its power to heal and influence our lives. The Japanese call this energy Ki. It is also known as Chi by the Chinese, Prana by a number of Asian cultures and the Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost by most of the western world.
We carry this energy in and around our bodies from the moment we are conceived. Ki is the very essence of the soul; it leaves the body when a person dies. Ancient Eastern cultures have harnessed and applied this energy for healing since before the birth of Jesus Christ.
Certainly, the importance of Ki energy and how it impacts our lives and well-being has long been recognised and this has led to the development of many techniques and disciplines such as Reiki, Tai Chi, Feng Shui, Meditation, Yoga and Acupuncture, which aim to stimulate the flow of Ki energy around the body to maintain health and energetic balance. Acupuncture for example uses needles to clear energy blocks at specific energy points in the body, Yoga uses breathing exercises, meditation and poses to activate and balance Ki, whilst Feng Shui looks to balance the flow of energy around a space by arranging items in a way that creates more harmony with the natural world. Reiki also works to bring more of this good Ki energy into our lives, by working to remove any negative and stagnant energy and rebalance the flow of Ki around the whole mind, body and spirit.
“Reiki is love. Love is wholeness. Wholeness is balance. Balance is well being. Wellbeing is freedom from disease” – Dr Mikao Usui
BALANCE ACROSS MIND BODY AND SOUL
Reiki is Holistic
In the Japanese Kanji writing system, the word Reiki is made up of two characters – ‘Rei’ and ‘Ki.’ Although the proper Japanese pronunciation is RYE-KEY, it has been westernised to RAY-KEY.
‘Rei’ means universal or omnipresent – present everywhere at the same time. Esoterically ‘Rei’ means spirit, spiritual consciousness or soul, the omniscient wisdom from God, the Divine or the higher self.
‘Ki’ means life force or life energy. It is the non-physical vitality that gives life to all living things. The word Reiki can therefore be translated as ‘Universal Life Force.’ This is essentially the energy of the Universe – the energy which makes up the earth and every one of the trillion cells in our body. It is neither positive nor negative; it is in fact the highest and most profound vibration of life. Divine in origin, it allows us all to become one with all things alive in our world. And we can harness its inbuilt wisdom to restore the body’s natural energy flow and stimulate our own natural self-healing abilities.
There are seven main energy centres in the body that control the flow of the universal life force. They are called the Chakra’s. Each chakra is responsible for supplying energy to specific parts of the body. When they are blocked or clogged the body becomes sick and the flow of energy is diluted. A full Reiki treatment reopens the chakras and re-balances the flow of the universal life force around the body.
