Cold Hands during a Reiki Treatment: What does it mean?
One of our Reiki Healing Association Members asked me: “I recently was preparing for a Reiki treatment on a client when my hands did not get warm as they usually did. In fact, they were quite cold. Needless to say, this threw me off track. I delayed the treatment until my hands warmed. “
I think this question raises some important points for Reiki Practitioners, especially those just starting out and getting used to working with energy. Because sometime it can feel like there is a right or wrong way to work with energy, but it’s important to remember that working with energy, such as in Reiki, involves a combination of intention, practice, and personal connection and everyone will experience energy in different ways.
It’s also quite common for us as Reiki practitioners to notice variations in our experiences with energy from one session to the next.
The warmth of our hands is often thought to be a sign of the energy flow during a Reiki treatment, but it’s not the only indicator of effective practice. Energy work is dynamic and can be influenced by numerous factors. Each session is unique, and practitioners may encounter different sensations, feelings, or challenges.
Here are a few things to consider:
- 1. Energy Flow Variations: Reiki energy can manifest in many ways, not just through heat. Some practitioners feel aching, tingling, pulsing, or even coolness, I know I do. The quality of energy you perceive can be influenced by many factors, including your own physical and emotional state, the condition of the client, the environment, and even the day’s particular energetic influences.
- 2. Personal Factors: Consider if there were any personal factors that may have affected your energy levels. Fatigue, stress, or being cold yourself can influence the temperature of your hands. It’s important to take care of your own well-being to be an effective conduit for Reiki energy.
- 3. Client’s Needs: Sometimes, the energy may adapt to the needs of the client. If a client requires cooling rather than heating energy, your hands might feel cold as a reflection of the type of healing being channelled. Cold sensations in your hands could potentially indicate areas of energy blockage, either within yourself or the client. Use this as an opportunity to explore and address these blockages, either through self-Reiki, meditation, or other energy-clearing practices. Don’t be afraid to talk to your client about what you are experiencing. They may have valuable insights into their own experiences during a session. This feedback can help you refine your approach and gain a deeper understanding of the diverse ways individuals perceive energy.
- 4. Psychological Factors: Doubt or overthinking can also affect your practice. Recognize the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and energy. Emotional or mental states can influence the energy flow. Reflect on your own emotions and thoughts before and during a session, and consider how they might impact your energy experiences. You have to learn to leave doubts at the door, and trust in the process and remember that Reiki is intelligent energy that goes where it is needed, regardless of the sensations you feel in your hands.
- 5. External Temperatures: The ambient temperature can affect the perceived warmth of your hands. If the treatment room is cooler, your hands may not feel as warm as they usually do.
- 6. Energetic Development: As you progress in your Reiki practice, you may find that your sensitivity to energy changes. This can be part of your development as a practitioner, as you become more attuned to the subtleties of energy work.
- 7. Continuous Practice: Regular practice helps to maintain and enhance the flow of Reiki energy. It’s also beneficial to regularly self-treat to ensure their own energy field is clear and balanced.
- 8. Acceptance and Non-Judgment: Embrace the variability of energy experiences without judgment. Sometimes, external factors or the unique energy dynamics between you and the client can result in different sensations. Acceptance allows for a more open and fluid energy exchange.
Reiki Sensations: what does Reiki feel like?
The experience of Reiki energy can vary from person to person, and even from one session to another. People often describe a range of sensations during a Reiki session, that are not only limited to hot or cold hands during reiki. Here are some other common experiences:
- Tingling or Vibrations: Some people report feeling tingling or gentle vibrations in the areas being treated. This sensation is often associated with the energy moving and balancing.
- Images or Colors: During a session, some people report seeing images, colors, or experiencing visualizations. This is a subjective aspect and may not occur for everyone.
- Pulsations or Flowing Sensations: Sensations of energy pulsing or flowing through the body are also reported. It might feel like waves of energy moving through different areas.
- Increased Awareness: Recipients often mention an increased awareness of their own body, thoughts, and emotions. This heightened awareness can contribute to the overall healing process.
- Lightness or Expansion: Some individuals describe a feeling of lightness or expansion during a Reiki session. This might involve a sensation of energy spreading beyond the physical body.
- Emotional Release: Reiki can sometimes trigger emotional releases. This might involve feelings coming to the surface or a sense of catharsis. It’s considered a positive aspect of the energy healing process.
- Deep Relaxation: Reiki is known for inducing a state of deep relaxation. Recipients may feel a sense of calm, peace, and relaxation both physically and mentally.
It’s important to note that not everyone will have a noticeable sensation during a Reiki session, and that doesn’t diminish the effectiveness of the energy work. People have different sensitivities and ways of perceiving energy. The key is to approach Reiki with an open mind and a willingness to receive the healing energy in whatever way is most comfortable for the individual.
With Reiki, Intention is everything
Remember, the essence of Reiki lies in the intention to promote healing and balance. The effectiveness of a treatment is not solely dependent on the warmth of the practitioner’s hands but on the intention and the healing energy itself. As practitioners gain more experience, they often develop a greater understanding of the nuances and subtleties of energy dynamics.
We must understand that the energy we work with comes from a universal source. As a conduit for this energy, our role is to facilitate its flow. The sensations in our hands may vary, but the universal energy remains constant. Trust in the inherent wisdom of the energy itself. Reiki is still working, even if the sensations are different from session to session. 🙏
