The truth is the experience of Reiki can vary from person to person, and even from session to session. And there is no right or wrong way to feel or experience Reiki. But people who receive Reiki often report a range of sensations during and after a session. Let’s explore some of the most common Reiki sensations now.
What do people commonly experience during a Reiki session?
Sensations of warmth or heat
Sensations of warmth or heat are frequently reported during Reiki sessions. This sensation is often localized to specific areas where the hands are placed but can also spread throughout the body. The warmth is usually soothing and can help alleviate tension in the muscles, and it’s associated with the flow of energy. Changes in temperature can also serve as subtle signals, guiding the practitioner to move on to different areas or adjust their approach as needed.
Deep relaxation
One of the most common reactions to Reiki is a deep sense of relaxation and calm, akin to a deep state of meditation. As the practitioner begins, you might feel a sense of calm wash over you. This relaxation can be so profound that some people even fall asleep during the session. The calming environment, combined with the gentle energy flow, creates an ideal setting for stress relief. As the energy flows through the body, individuals often feel a profound sense of peace, as tension and stress stored within the muscles and the mind is released.
Energy movement
Tingling or pulsing sensations are also common during Reiki. These feelings can vary in intensity, from a gentle buzz to a more pronounced vibration. They are typically experienced in the area being treated but can also radiate to other parts of the body. It might feel like waves of energy moving, pulsing or flowing through different areas like a current. It can be particularly noticeable in areas with energy blockages or tension.
Emotional release
Reiki is believed to help release blocked or stagnant energy and has the profound ability to release emotions buried deep within the subconscious mind. During a session, individuals may experience emotional releases such as tears, laughter, or feelings of profound peace and contentment. These natural responses are an essential part of the healing process, providing catharsis and relief from emotional burdens. Reiki is believed to help release blocked or stagnant energy.
Lightness
A feeling of lightness or expansion is also often reported, as if a weight has lifted from them. This might involve a sensation of energy spreading out beyond the physical body. Like a breath of fresh air for your spirit, leaving you feeling lighter, brighter, and ready to embrace each moment with renewed vigour.
Clarity
Reiki can quiet the chatter of the mind, bringing a sense of mental clarity and inner peace. Thoughts may slow down or become more focused, allowing for a deeper connection to oneself and the present moment. This mental stillness helps to dissolve anxieties and worries, creating a space where one can truly listen to their inner voice and intuition.
Visual experiences
During a session, some people report seeing images, colours, or experiencing visualizations. These experiences can range from seeing bright lights or specific hues to intricate patterns and symbolic imagery. For some, these visions can provide insights, evoke memories, or represent messages from their subconscious mind.
Improved well-being
Many people report an overall sense of well-being, reduced stress, and increased energy levels after receiving Reiki. They come away feeling good in themselves, ready to take on the day.
Not feeling anything at first
Not everyone feels distinct sensations during Reiki and this is another common reaction to Reiki. Energy is subtle, and sometimes things are happening on deeper levels that may not necessary manifest as an noticeable external reaction. Perhaps a few days or weeks later you may feel calmer or less reactive to something that really bothered you before. Or you notice a general improvement in your overall well-being and resilience in the face of life’s challenges.
Individual Experiences and Variations
Reiki is a deeply personal and varied experience. But every experience of Reiki is valid and valuableđź’šEvery person is uniquely different and as a result every person will have their own sense of how they feel the Reiki energy. And feeling or seeing something is not essential to the practice of Reiki.
Working with Reiki means learning to trust that Reiki energy know where to go and what is needed for the highest good of the individual.
While individual experiences may differ, the common thread is a sense of healing and balance. Whether you’re seeking stress relief, pain management, or emotional healing, Reiki offers a gentle yet powerful approach to well-being.
What If I don’t feel anything during a Reiki session?
Not feeling anything during a Reiki session is a common experience, and it doesn’t necessarily mean that the session wasn’t effective or that Reiki isn’t working for you. People have varying levels of sensitivity to energy, and some may not perceive the subtle sensations associated with Reiki right away.
Here are a few reasons why you might not feel anything during a Reiki session:
- Individual Sensitivity: Sensitivity to energy varies from person to person. Some individuals are naturally more attuned to subtle energies, while others may need more time or repeated sessions to develop this sensitivity.
- Expectations: Having specific expectations or trying too hard to feel something can sometimes hinder the experience. Relaxation and an open mind can contribute to a more receptive state.
- Stress or Distractions: If you’re feeling particularly stressed or distracted during a session, it might be challenging to notice subtle sensations. It’s important to find a quiet and comfortable environment to enhance your receptivity.
- Blockages or Imbalances: If there are significant energy blockages or imbalances in your system, it might take some time for the energy to flow freely and for you to notice the effects.
- Receptivity: Reiki works on multiple levels, including physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Your receptivity to energy healing can vary based on your current state of being and your openness to the process.
If you don’t feel anything during a Reiki session, it doesn’t mean that the session is ineffective. People often report experiencing benefits over time, even if they don’t feel immediate sensations. It’s essential to approach Reiki with an open mind and allow the process to unfold naturally. Additionally, discussing your experience with the Reiki practitioner can provide insights, and they may offer guidance on how to enhance your receptivity to the energy.
As Reiki Practitioners, we can often worry about the sensations we feel when performing a Reiki session. But as conduit for this energy, our role as Reiki Practitioners to facilitate its flow. The sensations in our hands may vary, but the universal energy remains constant. Trust in the inherent wisdom of the energy itself. Reiki is still working, even if the sensations are different from session to session.

I hope this article has provided you with a clearer understanding of what Reiki can feel like during a session.
