How Reiki supports your Senior Dog: Supporting Your Pet Through Their Golden Years
Animal Reiki: A natural, gentle approach to pain, anxiety and comfort in your ageing dog
My dog is turning five this weekend.
And while he’s not a senior just yet, it’s stirred something deeper in me… that quiet awareness of how quickly time seems to pass when love is involved. One moment they are bounding through fields with endless, untamed energy—ears flapping, eyes bright, completely immersed in the joy of being alive—and then, almost without us noticing when the shift truly began, they are moving just a little slower, resting just a little longer, leaning into us not just for affection, but for comfort, for closeness, for something unspoken yet deeply understood.
It’s also brought back memories of my previous dog (how different they were in personality, their quirks, their rhythms…) and how, in his later years, life softened. He slowed down, yes…but he never stopped loving his walks, his people, or the simple joy of his daily routines.
And that’s the truth of it, isn’t it?
As our beloved animals move into their golden years, their needs may change, their bodies may shift, their pace may soften—but their capacity for love, for presence, for connection… remains unwavering, untouched, and perhaps even deepened.
And as Reiki Practitioners, we are in a uniquely beautiful position to meet them in this space.
To offer something that doesn’t ask them to keep up, to improve, or to be anything other than exactly who they are in that moment.
To offer something gentle. Respectful. Non-invasive. To offer Reiki.
So in this space, I find myself asking…
What does it truly mean to support a senior dog?
What shifts—not only within them, but within us as their caregivers and companions?
What begins to matter most when time feels more precious?
And how can we support them not just physically, but energetically and emotionally… in a way that honours this stage of their life?

Understanding the Senior Dog
Dogs are typically considered seniors from around seven years of age, though this varies by breed and size – with larger breeds often reaching this stage sooner. Just like us, aging animals experience physical, emotional, and even energetic shifts. A gradual unfolding of change that touches the body, the mind, and the energy field all at once.
Physically, we may begin to notice the more obvious signs—stiffness in the joints, a slower rise from rest, hesitation on stairs, or a reluctance to engage in activities that once came so easily.
There may be sensory changes too… a softening of hearing, a dimming of sight, a slight delay in response that wasn’t there before.
And then there are the more subtle, often misunderstood shifts—changes in sleep patterns, moments of confusion, restlessness at unusual hours, or a quiet need for reassurance that seems to arise without clear cause.
Chronic conditions may begin to surface, and with them, a heightened sensitivity—not just physically, but emotionally and energetically—to their environment.
Loud sounds may feel sharper. Busy spaces more overwhelming. Even the energy within a home can begin to affect them more deeply than it once did.
And yet… beyond all of this, there is something else happening.
Something quieter. Softer. More profound.
Senior animals often become more attuned, more intuitive, more energetically aware.
It is as though, as their bodies begin to slow, their inner world begins to expand.
They feel more. They notice more. They respond to subtleties we may not even perceive.
And in this heightened sensitivity, traditional forms of support—particularly those that are physical or invasive—can sometimes feel overwhelming or too much for a system that is already working hard to maintain balance.
This is where the gentle art of Reiki becomes a transformative tool.
Why Reiki Is So Powerful for Senior Animals
Reiki offers something that aging animals truly need, not intensity, not intervention, not expectation… but gentleness, presence, and a kind of care that asks absolutely nothing of them in return.
There is no pressure placed upon their body to respond in a certain way. No expectation that they must improve, recover, or engage.
Nothing to fix, force, or figure out.
Instead, Reiki meets them exactly where they are in the slowing…in the softening…in the quiet unfolding of their later years.
It honours the rhythm their body has naturally moved into, rather than trying to pull them back into a pace that no longer belongs to them.
Where once there may have been movement, urgency, vitality—there is now a different kind of wisdom emerging, one that calls for stillness, patience, and deep, intuitive listening.
And Reiki, in its essence, responds to that call. It doesn’t override. It doesn’t rush. It doesn’t interfere. It simply attunes… and supports.
Because of its gentle and non-invasive nature, Reiki can sit beautifully alongside any veterinary care or treatment your animal may be receiving. It does not compete with medical intervention, nor does it attempt to replace it.
Instead, it weaves quietly into the background—supporting the nervous system, easing tension, softening discomfort, and creating space for the body to rest in a way that is often deeper than sleep alone can provide.
In the senior years, this kind of presence becomes everything. And as our animals move closer to the final chapters of their lives, Reiki becomes something sacred. Not a tool to hold on…but a way to walk beside them.
Through the subtle changes. Through the moments of letting go. Through the transition itself. It continues supporting peace, easing fear, and holding a gentle, loving space as they move from one state of being into another.
This is the quiet power of Reiki. Not in changing the outcome…but in transforming the experience into one of softness. Of dignity. Of deep, unwavering love.

My soul dog
I honestly don’t know how I will ever exist without my beautiful boy by my side…And maybe that’s not something we are ever meant to fully understand, resolve, or make peace with in advance.
Because to love another being—another species—so fully, so completely, so without condition… is, perhaps, one of the greatest gifts we are given in this lifetime.
A gift that is, by its very nature, intertwined with the certainty of one day having to let go.
And yet… we choose it anyway. Because what we receive in return is immeasurable.
The companionship that fills even the quietest days.
The loyalty that asks for nothing and gives everything.
The presence that becomes so constant, so woven into our lives, that it no longer feels separate from who we are.
So while I may not know how life will look without him beside me…what I do know is this: that having Reiki as he one day reaches those later chapters of his life brings a sense of peace I can’t quite put into words.
Not because it will stop time. Not because it will take away the heartbreak. But because it gives me a way to be with him… fully, consciously, lovingly… through it all.
To support him when his body begins to slow. To soothe him if there is discomfort or confusion. To offer him a space where he can simply rest, feel safe, and be held.
And when that time eventually comes, Reiki gives me a way to walk beside him, not in fear—but in presence.
To honour his journey.
To ease his transition.
To surround him with the same love he has given so freely his entire life.
And somehow, in that knowing… there is comfort. Not in the idea of losing him, but in the quiet reassurance that when the time comes,
he will not be alone… and neither will I.
I know this because I used Reiki when my childhood dog passed away—at home, in my dad’s arms, surrounded by love, by familiarity, by the quiet presence of the people who had been his whole world. I remember placing my hands gently over him to ease the edges of that moment, to soften the transition, to let him feel—right until the very end—that he was safe, that he was loved, that he could let go. A life closing in the same way it had been lived… surrounded by love.
That experience stayed with me. It reshaped the way I understand Reiki—not just as a tool for healing, but as a companion through life’s most challenging thresholds.
How Reiki Supports the Senior Dog
I often notice that older dogs can be more receptive to Reiki than younger ones. Not because they’re passive or resigned – but because they’ve lived long enough to recognise a genuinely calm, unhurried presence. They settle into it. They trust it in a way that a boisterous two-year-old often can’t quite manage yet.
When we enter a truly grounded Reiki state — regulated breath, relaxed body, calm intention — we’re activating our own parasympathetic nervous system. Our heart rate steadies, our muscle tension releases, our voice softens. Animals are exquisitely sensitive to these signals. Through what scientists call co-regulation, your dog’s nervous system reads yours and begins to mirror it. When yours signals safety, theirs begins to follow. Their breathing slows. Their muscles soften. The stress hormones that have been quietly running in the background start to ease.
Here are some of the powerful ways Reiki can support senior dogs:
• Easing Physical Discomfort
Reiki can help soften areas of tension and support the body in releasing held stress, which may offer relief from stiffness, soreness, or chronic conditions such as arthritis, gently inviting the body back toward a sense of ease.
A landmark 2025 study by holistic veterinarian Dr. Claudia Barbieri, published in the Journal of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association, found that 100% of dogs aged eight and over who received distant Reiki showed measurable pain reduction, with 70% experiencing excellent or moderate relief across six weekly sessions.
• Regulating the Nervous System
By encouraging a parasympathetic state, Reiki helps reduce stress, anxiety, and overstimulation, which is particularly important for dogs experiencing cognitive changes or heightened sensitivity.
• Supporting Emotional Wellbeing
Senior dogs may experience confusion, vulnerability, or changes in behaviour. Reiki offers a steady, reassuring presence that helps them feel safe, supported, and less alone in those moments.
For a senior dog experiencing “sundowning” or general confusion (Canine Cognitive Dysfunction), the world can feel like it’s tilting. They may pace, stare at walls, or become distressed when the sun goes down. Reiki acts as an anchor. It provides a consistent, safe “home base” that doesn’t rely on sight or hearing. It calms the “fight or flight” response, helping them find their way back to a state of internal quiet.
• Encouraging Rest and Restoration
Deep, restorative rest is essential in the aging process. Reiki creates the internal conditions for this kind of rest to occur more naturally and more deeply.
• Enhancing Quality of Life
Rather than focusing on fixing or reversing aging, Reiki supports comfort, calm, and presence—helping your dog experience their days with greater ease and softness. By reducing the “noise” of physical and mental discomfort, Reiki allows a dog’s true personality to shine through. It gives them the energetic “boost” needed to enjoy those simple daily routines—the sniff of a favorite tree or the wag of a tail when a loved one enters the room.
• Providing Gentle Support Through Transition
As dogs approach the later stages of life, Reiki becomes a quiet companion—helping to ease fear, reduce distress, and hold a peaceful, loving space through the process of letting go.
• The gift of being together
Reiki is a powerful way to bond with your pet. For any dog, there is no greater comfort than a human who is willing to spent time and energy with them in a space of total safety and love.

Adapting Your Reiki Practice for Senior Dogs
Because in their later years, our dogs are already navigating so much—physically, emotionally, energetically—the way we meet them in our practice must reflect that.
Consent first
A cornerstone of ethical animal Reiki practice is consent. Animals are not passive recipients — they are active participants in the healing exchange. A skilled animal Reiki practitioner offers energy from a place of stillness and invitation, allowing the animal to engage, move away, or simply rest nearby as they choose.
This is especially important with senior dogs, who may have reduced tolerance for prolonged handling. The non-contact or light-touch nature of Reiki respects their boundaries entirely, making sessions safe, gentle, and deeply honouring.
In a senior dog’s life, many things are done to them for their own good. Reiki is offered to them as a gift they can choose to accept.
Reiki Without Touch
One of the most profound aspects of Reiki for senior dogs is that it does not require direct physical contact. This is a game-changer for aging animals, and it’s a detail I always emphasise to my students.
As dogs age, their relationship with touch often changes. While they still crave affection, the physical reality of their bodies can make traditional petting or massage complicated.Areas of pain, stiffness, or sensitivity can create a quiet tension beneath the surface, even in moments that appear calm.
The “hands-off” approach of Reiki meets them in this reality with deep respect. It allows you to offer comfort, connection, and energetic support—without placing any demand on their physical body.
Why “No Touch” Matters for Seniors
- Respecting Pain Thresholds: A dog with severe hip dysplasia or spinal stiffness may become “touch-shy.” They might worry that a hand moving toward them will accidentally bump a sore spot, causing them to remain in a state of hyper-vigilance. Reiki allows you to offer deep comfort from a few feet away, ensuring they feel safe and unthreatened.
- Managing Sensory Overload: For dogs with failing sight or hearing, a hand suddenly appearing in their peripheral vision can trigger a startle reflex. By offering Reiki energetically—sitting quietly in their vicinity—you allow them to “feel” your presence before you ever enter their personal bubble.
- Autonomy and Choice: In a Reiki session, the dog is the director. By not placing your hands directly on them, you give them the freedom to move closer if they want more intensity, or to move away if they’ve had enough. As they can’t tell us in words, they need to have the power to show us in their behaviours.
The length of the Reiki Session
Shorter sessions—sometimes just a few minutes—can be deeply effective for senior dogs, because the body is already more receptive, more sensitive, more attuned.
Watch for the subtle cues:
- A deep sigh
- A shift into rest
- Softened eyes
- Slower breathing
- Or even a gentle disengagement
These are all forms of communication. Sometimes, a dog will take what they need quickly and then move away. This is not a sign that the session has failed. It is a sign that it has been complete.
And sometimes, those small, consistent moments—offered daily, or intuitively—create far more impact than a longer session ever could.
So What does a typical session with a senior dog look like?
A Reiki session for a senior dog doesn’t need to be elaborate. It might begin with you sitting quietly in the same room, grounding yourself and setting a gentle intention. You allow the energy to flow — hands resting lightly on your lap. I let them register that I’m there, and I wait. Consent matters enormously with older dogs. They’ve earned the right to decide whether they want this today.
Most of the time, within a minute or two, something shifts. A small sigh. A softening around the eyes. Sometimes they’ll move slightly toward me, or reposition so that part of their body is closer to my hands. That’s the invitation.
From there I might rest my hands lightly on their shoulders or alongside their ribcage — or I might work with my hands just a few inches away from their body without touching at all. There’s no rigid sequence of positions. I follow what they seem to be asking for, and I follow the warmth and sensation in my own hands. When I feel a pull toward a particular area — the hips, the base of the spine, somewhere they’re carrying discomfort — I stay there until I feel that quality shift.
You’ll know the session is complete when they tell you — a deeper exhale, a slow blink, sometimes a gentle move away. You withdraw your hands slowly, take a breath of gratitude, and let them settle in their own time.
That’s it. No drama. No performance. Just two beings in a quiet room, and the kind of presence that asks nothing and offers everything.
Sessions can be as short as ten to fifteen minutes, or longer if the animal welcomes it. Frequency can be daily or a few times per week, fitting naturally into your routine together.
