How to Use Crystals in Your Reiki Healing Sessions: A Practical Guide for Reiki Practitioners and Energy Healers
The Ancient Art of Crystal Healing — and Why It Still Works
Long before the wellness world discovered rose quartz face rollers and amethyst water bottles, healers, shamans, priestesses and physicians across virtually every ancient culture on earth were working with crystals as powerful tools for healing, protection and spiritual alignment. The ancient Egyptians adorned their dead with lapis lazuli and turquoise to assist safe passage into the afterlife. Traditional Chinese medicine incorporated jade as a tool for balancing life force energy. Ancient Indian texts describe the therapeutic use of gemstones in Ayurvedic practice. The Greeks wore amethyst to prevent intoxication and sharpen the mind. In every corner of the world, across every era of recorded human history, people have understood intuitively what modern energy science is now beginning to articulate: that crystals carry a vibrational intelligence that interacts with the human energy field.
Today, crystals have become one of the most popular and accessible tools any the energy healing toolkit — and for good reason. They are beautiful, they are affordable, they are deeply personal, and when worked with consciously and intentionally, they can significantly deepen the quality and transformative power of a healing session. Whether you are a Reiki practitioner looking to enrich your client work, an energy healer developing your practice, or simply someone exploring crystal healing for your own personal journey, this guide will give you the practical, grounded foundation you need to begin working with crystals with genuine confidence and skill.
The guide covers:

How Do Crystals Actually Work?
This is the question that sceptics ask — and it is a fair one. How, exactly, does a piece of rock from the earth affect the human energy field?
The answer begins with the understanding that everything in the universe — including the human body — is in a constant state of vibration. Every cell, every organ, every thought and every emotion carries its own unique energetic frequency. Crystals, formed over millions of years deep within the earth under conditions of extreme pressure and heat, carry extraordinarily stable and consistent vibrational frequencies. This stability is not mystical conjecture — it is physics. The quartz crystal, for example, is used in virtually every digital watch, computer and electronic device on the planet precisely because of its ability to maintain a precise, consistent electromagnetic frequency. It is what scientists call “piezoelectric” — capable of generating an electrical charge in response to mechanical stress. The science of crystal frequency is foundational to modern technology.
When we bring a crystal into contact with the human energy field — whether through physical placement on the body, holding in the hands, or simply bringing it into close proximity — its stable frequency interacts with the less stable, more fluctuating frequencies of our own energy system. `This process is known as entrainment — the tendency of two oscillating systems in proximity to synchronise their frequencies over time. In simple terms, the steady, coherent frequency of the crystal helps to bring the more chaotic frequencies of an imbalanced energy field back into harmony.
Add to this the profound power of intention — the conscious, focused direction of healing energy toward a specific outcome — and the result is a healing modality of genuine depth and subtlety. Crystals are not passive decorations in a healing session. They are active, intelligent participants.
The Role of Colour Therapy
There is a second layer to how crystals work that is often overlooked — and it sits right on the surface, visible to everyone who has ever been struck by the deep purple of an amethyst or the warm glow of a piece of citrine. That layer is colour.
Colour therapy — also known as chromotherapy — is one of the oldest healing systems in recorded history, with roots in ancient Egyptian sun temples, Ayurvedic medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Its core principle is elegantly simple: every colour carries a distinct vibrational frequency, and those frequencies interact with the human body and energy field in specific, measurable ways. The visible spectrum of light is, after all, simply a range of electromagnetic frequencies — and the body is exquisitely sensitive to electromagnetic input.
Studies in environmental psychology and photobiology have demonstrated that colour exposure has real, physiological effects on the human nervous system — influencing heart rate, cortisol levels, mood, focus and even immune function. Red light stimulates and energises. Blue light calms and lowers blood pressure. Yellow light activates mental clarity and optimism. Green light promotes balance and restoration. These are not metaphors. They are measurable biological responses.
When we bring this understanding into the world of crystal healing, something beautiful becomes clear: the colour of a crystal is not merely decorative. It is a direct expression of its vibrational nature — and one of the primary mechanisms through which it interacts with the chakra system. This is why the chakra colour correspondences are so consistent across virtually every healing tradition. The Root Chakra resonates with red — and red stones like red jasper and garnet carry that same grounding, energising, life-force frequency. The Throat Chakra resonates with blue — and blue stones like aquamarine and blue lace agate carry the same calm, clarifying, truth-speaking energy that the colour itself embodies. The Heart Chakra resonates with green and pink — and rose quartz and green aventurine mirror that frequency of softness, openness and unconditional love.
When we place a crystal on a chakra point during a healing session, we are simultaneously working with its stable atomic makeup, its electromagnetic field, the focused power of our intention — and the direct colour frequency it radiates into the energy centre it rests upon. These layers do not compete with each other. They compound. And the result is a healing tool of remarkable depth, subtlety and elegance — one that works on physical, emotional, energetic and even psychological levels simultaneously.
Choosing the Right Crystals for Your Healing Practice
One of the most common questions from practitioners beginning to incorporate crystals into their sessions is simply: where do I start? The world of crystals is vast, beautiful and occasionally overwhelming — and it can be tempting to feel that you need an encyclopaedic knowledge before you can begin. You don’t. You need curiosity, intention and a willingness to trust your own energy instincts.
Trust your intuition first The single most important principle in choosing crystals is this: let yourself be drawn. When you are in the presence of crystals — whether in a shop, at a market or browsing online — notice which ones catch your attention. Notice which ones you want to pick up, touch or keep returning to. This is not random. Your energy field is responding to the frequency of the crystal and communicating to you, in the language of attraction, that this is what you need right now. Analytical research has its place — but it comes second to your own felt sense. Trust the pull.
Build a core collection While there are hundreds of crystals available to the modern practitioner, a surprisingly small collection can serve the full spectrum of healing work. Here is a solid foundation to begin with:
Clear Quartz — the master healer. Amplifies intention, directs energy and enhances the work of every other crystal it is placed alongside. Every crystal practitioner needs clear quartz.
Black Tourmaline — the great protector. Grounds energy, creates a protective energetic boundary and transmutes negative energy.
Amethyst — the spiritual bridge. Deeply calming, intuitively activating and spiritually expansive. Wonderful for the upper chakras and for sessions working with grief, anxiety or the need for higher guidance.
Rose Quartz — the heart healer. Radiates unconditional love, compassion and gentle emotional healing. Invaluable in sessions working with heartbreak, self-worth, forgiveness or trauma.
Citrine — the activator. Carries warm, solar energy that energises, uplifts and dissolves stagnation. Wonderful for sessions working with self-esteem, motivation and personal power.
Carnelian — the creative fire. Activating, warming and emotionally restorative. Particularly powerful for creative blocks and emotional healing.
Black Obsidian or Smoky Quartz — deep cleansers. Powerful tools for releasing deeply held energetic blocks. Work with these thoughtfully and always ground your client thoroughly after their use.
Selenite — the cleanser and channel. Selenite never needs cleansing itself and has a remarkable ability to clear stagnant energy from the aura, the room and other crystals. A selenite wand is one of the most versatile tools a practitioner can own.

Match crystals to the chakras One of the most practical and elegant frameworks for crystal selection in a healing session is the chakra system. Each chakra has a set of crystals that resonate with its particular colour and frequency — and placing the appropriate crystal on or near the relevant chakra can significantly support healing and balance. We have explored the specific crystals for the Root, Sacral and Solar Plexus Chakras in detail elsewhere in our Chakra Healing series. As a quick reference:
- Root Chakra (red/black stones): Red Jasper, Black Tourmaline, Hematite, Smoky Quartz, Garnet
- Sacral Chakra (orange stones): Carnelian, Orange Calcite, Sunstone, Peach Moonstone, Amber
- Solar Plexus Chakra (yellow/gold stones): Citrine, Tiger’s Eye, Pyrite, Yellow Calcite, Golden Topaz
- Heart Chakra (green/pink stones): Rose Quartz, Green Aventurine, Malachite, Rhodonite, Emerald
- Throat Chakra (blue stones): Aquamarine, Blue Lace Agate, Sodalite, Lapis Lazuli, Turquoise
- Third Eye Chakra (indigo/purple stones): Amethyst, Labradorite, Lapis Lazuli, Purple Fluorite, Iolite
- Crown Chakra (white/violet stones): Clear Quartz, Selenite, Lepidolite, Moonstone, Charoite
How to Prepare Your Crystals Before a Session
Working with crystals in a professional healing context requires that they are energetically clean, consciously charged and set with clear intention before each session. Crystals are highly sensitive energetic tools — they absorb, store and transmit energy, and a crystal that has not been properly cleansed can carry residual energy from previous sessions, people or environments into your current work. This is not desirable for you, your client or your crystals.
Cleansing your crystals There are many effective ways to cleanse crystals, and different practitioners favour different methods. Choose what resonates with you and what is appropriate for the specific crystals you are working with — for example, some crystals, such as selenite, celestite and kyanite, are water-soluble and should never be cleansed using water-based methods.
Sound cleansing is one of the most universally safe and effective methods — passing your crystals through the vibration of a Tibetan singing bowl, tuning fork or even your own voice (humming or toning) clears them thoroughly without risk of damage. This is the method many practitioners choose as their primary cleansing practice.
Moonlight is deeply powerful for crystal cleansing — leaving your crystals outside or on a windowsill on the night of a full moon bathes them in lunar energy that clears and recharges them simultaneously. This is a beautiful monthly ritual for any practitioner.
Smoke cleansing using sustainably sourced sage, palo santo or rosemary smoke is another cleansing method — pass the crystal through the smoke three times with clear intention. Please ensure you are in a well-ventilated space when smoke cleansing, and be mindful of anyone in your environment who may have respiratory sensitivities, asthma or allergies. Never leave burning materials unattended, and always use a heat-safe dish to catch any ash or embers safely.
Selenite is uniquely self-cleansing and has the remarkable property of cleansing other crystals simply by proximity. Keeping a selenite charging plate or a large selenite wand in your healing space provides a continuous gentle cleansing field for all the crystals within it.
Sunlight is energising and cleansing, but should be used cautiously — prolonged sunlight can fade the colour of many crystals, including amethyst, citrine and rose quartz. Brief exposure of no more than a few hours is generally safe. But you must research your individual stones before using this method.
Intention alone — holding the crystal in both hands, taking a deep breath, and consciously directing the intention for it to be cleared and reset — is more powerful than it is given credit for. Intention is, after all, the foundation of all energy work.
Charging and setting intention Once cleansed, hold each crystal you intend to use in the session in both hands. Breathe slowly and deeply. Connect with the energy of the crystal — feel its weight, its temperature, its particular quality of presence. Then set your intention clearly: for this session, what healing do you wish this crystal to support? You might speak the intention aloud, or simply hold it clearly in your mind and heart. This step transforms a beautiful stone into a fully activated healing tool.
Placing Crystals in a Healing Session
There are several approaches to working with crystals physically during a session, and the right approach will depend on your training, your client’s needs and your own intuitive guidance. Here are the most common and effective methods:
Chakra placement The most widely used approach in combined Reiki and crystal healing is to place crystals directly on or near the body at the chakra points. Your client lies comfortably on the treatment table, and you place the appropriate crystal for each chakra either on the body itself or just beside it on the table. You then proceed with your Reiki session as normal, allowing the crystals to work in concert with the Reiki energy. Many practitioners report that sessions combining both modalities feel noticeably deeper, more targeted and more energetically complete than either modality used alone.
A full chakra layout might look like this: black tourmaline between the feet or at the base of the spine for the root, carnelian on the lower abdomen for the sacral, citrine on the upper abdomen for the solar plexus, rose quartz on the heart, aquamarine on the throat, amethyst on the third eye, and clear quartz above the crown. This creates a complete energetic circuit along the central channel of the body that amplifies and focuses the healing work beautifully.
Targeted placement Rather than a full chakra layout, you may intuitively sense that a particular chakra or area of the body needs specific attention during a session — and place one or two crystals there accordingly. This targeted approach is particularly useful when working with a specific presenting concern: a client struggling with self-esteem might benefit from citrine placed at the solar plexus; one processing grief might benefit from rose quartz at the heart and amethyst at the third eye; one experiencing chronic anxiety might benefit from black tourmaline at the feet and smoky quartz at the root.
Crystal grids A crystal grid is a geometric arrangement of crystals placed around or near the client during a session, creating a unified energetic field that supports the intention of the healing. Grids can be as simple as four clear quartz points placed at the four corners of the treatment table — pointing inward to amplify the healing — or as elaborate as a full sacred geometry arrangement beneath the table. The grid does not need to be complicated to be effective. What matters is that it is placed with clear intention, that the crystals are harmonically aligned and that the central intention of the session is held consciously throughout.
Holding crystals A beautifully simple and often underused approach is simply to place an appropriate crystal in each of the client’s hands during the session. This grounds them, centres them and helps them connect with the healing frequencies at a physical level. Smooth, palm-sized tumblestones are ideal for this purpose. Clients often report that holding specific crystals during a session significantly deepens their felt sense of the healing — particularly when working with emotional release.
Aura sweeping A selenite wand or clear quartz point can be used to sweep the client’s aura before and after the hands-on portion of the session — moving slowly and intuitively through the energetic field at a distance of several inches from the body, clearing stagnant or disharmonious energy and helping to seal and smooth the aura at the close of the session. This is a practice with deep roots in many healing traditions and one that many clients experience as profoundly tangible, even before you have laid a hand on them.
Working with Crystals Intuitively
As your experience with crystals deepens, you will increasingly find that your most valuable guide is not a reference book but your own intuitive sensitivity. Learning to feel the energy of different crystals — their temperature, their texture, their particular quality of presence — and to sense where they want to be placed in a session is a skill that develops with practice, attention and trust.
Some practical ways to develop your crystal intuition:
Hold daily. Spend time each day simply holding your crystals — one at a time, with eyes closed. Notice how each one feels differently in your hands. Does it feel warm or cool? Heavy or light? Expansive or containing? Active or still? These subtle sensations are your energy field in dialogue with the crystal’s frequency. The more you practise listening, the clearer the language becomes.
Ask before you reach. Before selecting crystals for a session, take a moment to become still and ask — either aloud or inwardly — which crystals want to be present for this particular person at this particular time. Then trust the first response that comes. This might feel strange at first, but with practice it becomes one of the most natural and reliable aspects of your work.
Notice what clients respond to. Pay attention to which crystals your clients are drawn to in the waiting area, which ones they pick up and don’t want to put down, which ones they respond to most strongly during a session. Their bodies know what they need, and this knowing often expresses itself through attraction to specific stones.
Keep a crystal journal. Note which crystals you used in each session, where you placed them, what you sensed from them and what your client reported. Over time, patterns emerge that deepen your practical understanding far more richly than theory alone ever could.
Crystal Healing for Your Own Practice and Self-Care
One of the most important things any practitioner can understand is that you cannot pour from an empty vessel. Your own energetic health, clarity and vitality are not separate from the quality of the healing you offer — they are the very foundation of it. Working with crystals as part of your own daily self-care practice is not a luxury for the energy healer. It is a professional responsibility.
Some simple daily practices to keep your own energy clear, protected and nourished:
Morning intention setting. Begin each day by holding a crystal that resonates with your intention for the day — clear quartz for clarity, citrine for confidence, black tourmaline for protection, rose quartz for compassion. Hold it for a few minutes in meditation, set your intention, and carry it with you or place it on your desk.
Post-session clearing. After each client session, hold a piece of black tourmaline or smoky quartz and consciously release any energy that is not yours. This is a non-negotiable practice for practitioners. You cannot do your best work if you are carrying the energetic residue of previous clients.
Crystal meditation. A weekly meditation with your full crystal collection — laid out in a grid, placed on your own chakra points or simply gathered around you as you sit — is one of the most restorative practices available to the working energy healer. Allow yourself to receive the healing rather than always directing it.
Crystal-infused bathing. Placing water-safe crystals in a warm bath — rose quartz, clear quartz, amethyst — combined with a few drops of essential oil and the intention of deep cleansing and restoration, is one of the most profoundly nourishing forms of self-care available to the practitioner.
Sleeping with crystals. Placing amethyst, selenite or moonstone beneath your pillow or on your bedside table supports deep, restorative sleep, enhances dream recall and gently processes the energetic experiences of the day while you rest.
A Note on Ethics and Professionalism
As with all healing modalities, it is important to work with crystals within appropriate professional boundaries and with clear, honest communication with your clients.
Always ask your client before placing any crystal on their body — explain what you are doing, why you have chosen that crystal and invite them to tell you if anything feels uncomfortable. Not every client will have prior experience with crystals, and what feels natural and obvious to you may feel strange or unfamiliar to them. Creating a safe, transparent space around crystal work is essential.
Be honest about what crystals are and what they can do. They are powerful, beautiful tools that support and deepen healing — they are not cures, they do not diagnose, and they are not a replacement for medical or psychological care. The language we use around crystal healing matters. “This crystal may support the release of anxiety” is very different from “this crystal will fix your anxiety.” The former is honest, the latter is not.
Finally, ensure that your crystals are sourced ethically wherever possible. The crystal industry, like many industries, has a complex supply chain — and many of the most popular crystals are mined in conditions that cause significant harm to the environments and communities around them. Buying from reputable, transparent suppliers; choosing recycled or secondhand crystals where possible; and asking questions about sourcing are all ways of honouring the profound gift these stones offer by ensuring that gift was not given at someone else’s expense.
Crystals are one of the most ancient, accessible and genuinely powerful tools available to the modern energy healer. When worked with thoughtfully, intentionally and with genuine respect for both their intelligence and their limits, they have the capacity to enrich every healing session you offer — creating experiences that feel more focused, more complete and more deeply transformative for the people who trust you with their energy. More than that, they invite you into a relationship with the natural world that is itself a form of healing, a reminder that the earth is not simply the ground beneath our feet but a living, vibrating, endlessly generous source of wisdom, beauty and support.
Remember that crystal healing is a complementary practice and not a substitute for medical treatment. If you have any serious medical concerns, always consult a qualified healthcare professional.
