Reiki for wildlife: A Guide to Healing Wild Animals with Reiki Energy
Every day on my daily dog walks, I am lucky to be able to connect with nature and animals. There are horses, cows, and chickens in the fields and allotments near my home. Dogs running alongside their owners. Even a group of bright green parakeets that once escaped from a house sometimes fly overhead back to their wild home in the trees by my local park. These moments ground me. They make me slow down, pause, and truly see the beauty of the natural world. For a moment, stress fades, replaced by a quiet sense of presence and connection.

But when you don’t see wildlife every day, it’s easy to forget about them. In a world of concrete, screens, and constant busyness, wild animals seem distant. They don’t fit neatly into modern life. Yet, they are vital.
Why? Because they keep nature in balance. Birds spread seeds. Bees pollinate plants. Predators control populations. Every species plays a role. When they disappear, ecosystems collapse.
If you’ve taken my Animal Reiki Program at the Reiki Healing Association, you know animals have always been a part of my life. I grew up surrounded by chickens, ducks, rabbits, birds, dogs, fish, and even a tortoise. By the age of four, I knew I wanted to help animals. But my greatest calling was to the ocean. I would tell my parents I was going to save the whales and protect marine life. Maybe it was because I spent my early years by the sea in Australia. Maybe it was something deeper. But from as far back as I can remember, I felt drawn to conservation.
I was incredibly fortunate to be attuned to Reiki at a young age. I remember my dad teaching me the Reiki principles, and I loved knowing that Usui cared about all creatures, not just humans. He wanted us to be kind to them. That idea stayed with me.
Animals are highly receptive to energy. Unlike humans, they don’t overthink or doubt it—they simply feel and respond. And given the daily challenges wildlife faces—habitat loss, climate change, pollution, and injury—Reiki is one way we can help.
It’s easy to feel helpless when you see animals in distress. But you don’t have to be physically near an animal to make a difference. Here’s how.
Distance Reiki for Wildlife
Many of the Animal Reiki practitioners we train share a fascinating experience: as they start learning and building their Reiki connection, animals begin to approach them more frequently. Birds, squirrels, rabbits, butterflies—even other peoples pets. It’s a common story that reinforces the natural, magnetic connection animals have to energy.
However, when working with wild animals, it’s essential to approach them with respect and care. Wild animals, like domestic pets, often need healing, but they don’t always welcome human contact. This is where Distance Reiki becomes especially valuable.
Why Distance Reiki for Wild Animals?
Wild animals, by nature, are not accustomed to human touch and may perceive it as a threat. For their safety and comfort, it is often best to send Reiki from a distance. In many cases, hands-on Reiki isn’t suitable for wildlife because of their heightened sensitivity to energy. Wild animals can be easily startled, and getting too close might cause stress rather than healing.
Distance Reiki allows you to send healing energy without physically touching or even being near the animal. This makes it the most respectful and gentle way to approach healing for wild animals. You can direct Reiki energy across distances or through natural barriers, such as from behind a window or from afar, which maintains the integrity of the animal’s space while still providing the healing energy they need.
Sending Reiki Across Any Distance
One of the beautiful things about Reiki is its versatility. You don’t need to be physically present to send healing energy. Whether the animal is in your local park, in a forest far away, or in an endangered habitat across the globe, Reiki transcends distance. With the right intention, you can send healing to any animal, wherever it may be. Distance Reiki can be beamed or channelled to animals anywhere with the right intention.

How to Send Distance Reiki to Wildlife
Sending Distance Reiki to wildlife is an incredibly powerful way to offer healing and support to animals near and far – without causing the animal stress, disturbing their natural environment or putting yourself in any danger. The process requires focus, respect, and intention. Here’s how to get started:
1. Ask for Consent
Before you begin sending Reiki to wildlife, there’s one crucial step you must always take: asking for the animal’s consent. Just as with any Reiki session, respect and permission are vital in creating a safe, effective healing experience.
Animals, like humans, have their own energy and autonomy. Before you send Reiki to a wild animal, it’s important to ask for their permission. You can do this energetically, through intention, or by simply asking out loud in a calm and respectful way.
How to Ask for Consent:
- In Your Mind or Out Loud: Calmly say or think something like, “I offer healing energy to you. If it is for your highest good and if you are open to receiving it, I send you Reiki now.” Affirm that the animal can receive the energy at a time of their choosing for their highest possible good.
- Tune Into Their Response: Take a moment to feel or sense the animal’s energy. Are they receptive, or do you feel a sense of hesitation or discomfort? If the animal is open to receiving Reiki, you may feel a subtle shift in the energy. If you sense resistance or fear, respect that. Not every animal will be ready to receive Reiki at that moment, and that’s okay.
- Trust Your Intuition: If you’re unsure, it’s helpful to trust your intuition. Your sense of whether the animal is open to receiving Reiki will often be clear. If you’re not receiving a clear “yes,” you can wait or try again later.
Asking for consent is a respectful boundary. You are acknowledging the animal’s sovereignty and offering your healing with respect, rather than imposing it. This practice helps to foster a deeper connection with the animal kingdom, where you work together in harmony.

2. Set Your Intention
Once you’ve received the animal’s consent, set your intention for the Reiki session. Be clear about what you want to achieve. Are you sending healing energy to an injured animal you’ve seen in your neighbourhood, or perhaps to an endangered species you’ve heard about? Are you sending energy to an entire habitat, like a forest or coral reef?
Imagine the animal(s) or ecosystem in need. Feel into the energy of what they are experiencing. You may feel the pain of an injured animal or the disturbance caused by habitat loss. Ground yourself in that feeling, then shift into a space of healing.
Example intention: “I send healing energy to all the animals in this forest, supporting their well-being and safety. May they be free from harm and live in balance with the land.”
The clearer your intention, the more focused your Reiki energy will be. Be present with your purpose.
3. Ground yourself and Prepare for Reiki
Before you send Reiki to wildlife, it’s important to ground yourself and prepare your energy. This helps to clear any distractions and allows you to connect more deeply with the energy of the animals or habitats you’re working with.
Start by using your typical grounding method. This might involve taking a few deep breaths, meditating, or visualizing yourself rooted into the earth. Grounding helps to align your energy and set a clear foundation for your Reiki session.
One method I personally use is drawing Master symbols on the palms of my hands. These symbols help to activate and amplify the energy and allow you to focus your intent on the healing process.
When sending Reiki to wildlife, sometimes it’s helpful to use a surrogate—an object that connects you to the animal or habitat you’re working with. This can act as a physical anchor, allowing your focus to remain sharp and your energy directed.
The surrogate method creates a tangible connection between you and the animal, whether it’s a direct connection or not. It helps you centre your energy and intention.
Here are some examples of how to use a surrogate:
- Photographs: If you have a picture of the animal or habitat, use that as a focal point. Looking at the image while sending Reiki helps you connect energetically with the being in the photo.
- Feathers or Stones: Sometimes, collecting items from nature like a feather, a leaf, or a stone that has an energetic connection to the animal or habitat is powerful. These objects act as a physical representation, bringing the energy of the environment closer to you.
- Maps: If you are sending Reiki to a wildlife habitat or an endangered area far away, you can use a map to focus on the region or ecosystem. Focus on the area of land where you want to direct healing energy.
If these objects aren’t available, don’t worry. Visualization works just as well. Simply close your eyes and imagine the animal or habitat in clear detail.
4. Activate Reiki Symbols (If Attuned)
Once you’ve set your intention and established a connection, it’s time to activate the Reiki symbols.
- Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen (Distance Symbol): This is the key to sending Reiki across space and time. Visualize the symbol in front of you, drawing it with your hand or seeing it in your mind’s eye. This connects you directly to the animal or habitat you are sending healing to.
- Cho Ku Rei (Power Symbol): Use this symbol to amplify the energy. Picture the symbol in a vibrant, radiant light. It serves as a doorway to increase the flow of Reiki, helping the healing energy to move quickly and powerfully.
- Sei He Ki (Emotional Healing Symbol): If you know the animal or habitat is in distress, you can use this symbol to focus on emotional healing. Imagine the animal’s pain or fear gently dissolving, replaced by a sense of peace.
5. Visualize the Healing Energy
Now, visualize the animal (or group of animals) in a peaceful, healthy state. Imagine them surrounded by a soft, glowing light—Reiki energy. See this light entering their body, healing their wounds, calming their fears, or replenishing their strength. Picture them fully restored, thriving in their natural habitat. Visualize the energy entering their body, easing any discomfort, and revitalizing their spirit. See the energy flowing freely through them, allowing them to absorb it as they need.
Visualize the healing energy working on specific needs:
- Healing Wounds: If the animal has physical injuries, picture the energy gently closing wounds and restoring the tissue to its natural, healthy state.
- Calming Fears: If the animal is stressed, imagine the Reiki energy bringing a sense of peace and relaxation to its mind and body.
- Replenishing Strength: If the animal is exhausted, visualize the energy revitalizing their body, filling them with renewed vitality.
Picture the animal restored—strong, vibrant, and full of life. If you’re working with a wild animal, imagine it thriving in its natural habitat, free from harm. Picture it moving with ease and joy, playing or hunting, or simply enjoying its environment.
If you’re working with a group of animals, visualize them surrounded by a protective, glowing ball of light. This light serves as a shield, keeping negativity away. See it expanding, encompassing all the animals in the group.
As you send the Reiki energy, engage all of your senses to deepen your connection to the healing process:
- Feeling: Feel the energy flowing through you as it extends to the animal. You may sense the animal’s energy blending with yours. Trust in this connection.
- Sound: Picture the sounds of the animal’s habitat—the rustling of leaves, the gentle hum of bees, the calls of birds in the trees.
- Scent: Visualize the earthy smells of the forest, the salt of the ocean, or the fresh scent of grass and flowers.
6. Allow Reiki to Flow
Once you’ve visualized the healing energy, let it flow freely. Whether you place your hands on your heart, facing outward, or resting gently on a connection object, trust that Reiki will move where it’s most needed. You may feel warmth or tingling sensations. Allow the energy to continue flowing for 5-15 minutes or as long as you intuitively feel is needed.
This is a time of deep surrender. You don’t have to force the energy—it flows naturally when you are in alignment with the animal’s needs and your intention.
7. Release and Give Thanks
When you feel the session is complete, let go of the energy and thank the animal for receiving it. Imagine the Reiki connection dissolving, and express gratitude to the animal for allowing you to assist in their healing.
Thank the environment, the animal, and yourself for being part of this sacred exchange. Trust that the healing has been received exactly where it’s needed. Ground yourself in your typical methods.
Advanced Techniques for Animal Reiki for Wild Animals: Gyoshi-Ho
Gyoshi-Ho (pronounced Gyo-shi-ho) is a powerful Reiki technique used for sending healing energy through the eyes. The term “Gyoshi” means “to send energy with the eyes” and “Ho” means “method.” This method allows you to channel Reiki energy using your gaze, which can be especially effective in distance healing or when working with animals, as it enables you to establish a non-invasive connection.
If you are on a walk and notice an animal in need, you can ocus on them with a gentle gaze and set the intention to Reiki to go where it is needed. Don’t stare intensely, but instead let your eyes be open, soft, and receptive. Allow Reiki energy to flow naturally through your eyes, transmitting healing energy from your gaze. See the energy radiating from your eyes like a gentle beam of light, enveloping the animal with love and healing. Gyoshi-Ho allows you to send healing from a distance while maintaining respect for the animal’s boundaries.
When to Use Distance Reiki for Wildlife
- When you see an injured animal but can’t approach.
- When you hear about animals suffering due to natural disasters.
- To support endangered species and conservation efforts.
- To send healing to entire ecosystems affected by deforestation or pollution.
- Reiki for Injured or Rescued Animals
- Send Reiki before or after medical treatment.
- When you see an injured animal but can’t approach
Sometimes, you may come across a wild animal that appears to be hurt but is too fearful of human presence to allow you to get close. Distance Reiki allows you to send healing energy to help relieve pain, promote recovery, and calm the animal, without causing additional stress. - When you hear about animals suffering due to natural disasters
Natural disasters like hurricanes, floods, and wildfires can displace wildlife, causing injury, stress, and even death. Distance Reiki can be used to send healing to affected animals, offering comfort, reducing anxiety, and supporting their recovery in the aftermath. - To support endangered species and conservation efforts
Endangered species often face multiple threats such as habitat destruction, poaching, and climate change. Distance Reiki can be directed to these species, helping to strengthen their resilience and provide support to conservation efforts aimed at protecting them from extinction. - To send healing to entire ecosystems affected by deforestation or pollution
When large areas of land are cleared or ecosystems are contaminated, the delicate balance of life in those habitats is disrupted. You can send Reiki energy to heal entire ecosystems, helping to restore vitality to the soil, plants, and animals, and promoting a healthier, more balanced environment. - When animals are suffering from environmental stress or climate change
Climate change is impacting wildlife in many ways, including altering migration patterns, disrupting food sources, and pushing animals out of their natural habitats. Distance Reiki can help animals adjust to these changes by supporting their physical and emotional well-being, helping them navigate these challenges with more strength and resilience. - When you hear about a large-scale animal rescue operation
During animal rescue efforts, whether from illegal trafficking, neglect, or disasters, animals often experience immense trauma. Distance Reiki can be used to send healing to groups of animals in these situations, helping them recover from emotional and physical wounds, offering them comfort as they transition to safer environments. - To heal the land and habitats of indigenous species
Many areas around the world, especially those inhabited by indigenous wildlife, are being disrupted due to human activity. You can send Reiki to heal the land itself, focusing on the restoration of the natural environment that many species depend on, and promoting harmony between the land and the animals who live there. - When wildlife is being affected by poaching or illegal hunting
While you may not be able to directly intervene in a poaching situation, Distance Reiki can be used to send healing to the animals affected, supporting their emotional recovery from trauma, and perhaps even influencing the situation to shift, fostering awareness and care for the animals involved. - When you observe mass migrations or populations under stress
If you become aware of a large-scale migration event or a population of animals struggling to adapt to new circumstances, such as a shifting food source or new environmental conditions, Distance Reiki can be sent to support these animals in their transition, helping them find the strength they need to adapt and survive. - To support animals in zoos and wildlife sanctuaries
Even in protected environments like zoos or sanctuaries, animals can experience stress, health issues, or emotional struggles. Distance Reiki can be sent to them, promoting healing, comfort, and a better quality of life within their current conditions. - When animals face human-wildlife conflict
In areas where human and wildlife habitats overlap, animals can often find themselves in dangerous or stressful situations. Distance Reiki can be used to help animals who are affected by human-wildlife conflict, calming their fears, healing any injuries, and helping them find peace in the face of human encroachment. - To promote harmony in wildlife corridors
Wildlife corridors are areas that allow animals to safely move between different habitats. When these corridors are disrupted, it can cause stress and danger for wildlife. Sending Reiki to these areas can help restore balance, healing the environment and offering support to the animals that rely on these migration paths. - Reiki for Injured or Rescued Animals – Reiki can be a powerful complement to medical care, helping injured or rescued animals heal more quickly and experience less pain or stress. Reiki can also support the body’s natural healing process, helping it to cope with any trauma the animal has experienced. For instance, if an animal is brought into a clinic after being hit by a car or found in distress, sending Reiki can help stabilize their energy, ease pain, and prepare them mentally for whatever procedures are necessary. Reiki can help an animal relax during post-treatment recovery, allowing them to rest and heal more effectively.
Distance Reiki is a versatile and compassionate way to offer support to wildlife across a wide range of situations.

Signs That an Animal Has Received Reiki
With distance Reiki, it can sometimes feel hard to know if it’s truly making a difference—especially when working with wild animals you can’t physically see. But trust that Reiki always flows where it’s needed. Here are some signs to help you:
- A Sense of Peace or Warmth
You may feel a deep sense of peace, warmth, or tingling in your hands or body while sending Reiki. This often indicates that the energy is flowing and being received. - The Animal Appears Calmer
If the animal was restless or fearful before, you might notice them become more relaxed. They may settle down, stretch, groom themselves, or even fall asleep. If they were injured or distressed, they might breathe more evenly or show signs of relief. - The Animal Returns to Natural Behaviors
A wild animal that was tense or hiding might start behaving normally again—birds may resume singing, deer may continue grazing, or a fox may move with ease. This is a good sign that they have absorbed the energy and are feeling more at ease. - A Sudden Intuitive Feeling That the Session Is Complete
You may instinctively feel that the session is done, even if the animal is still nearby. Reiki practitioners often describe an internal “knowing” when the energy has been fully received. - No Immediate Reaction, but a Shift Over Time
Some animals won’t show an obvious reaction right away, and that’s okay. Reiki works beyond the physical level—it also supports emotional and energetic healing. Even if you don’t see an immediate change, trust that the energy has been received and will continue working as needed.
You don’t need visible confirmation to know you’ve made a difference. Reiki flows where it’s needed, supporting healing in ways that may not always be seen but are always felt.
Tips for Reiki for Wildlife
- Be Calm and Relaxed
Animals are highly sensitive to energy. Before you begin, take a few deep breaths and center yourself. Approach with a calm, open heart and no expectations. Your peaceful presence will help the animal feel safe. - Be Patient
Wildlife may not always be available to connect with or receptive to Reiki at the moment you try. Trust that the healing energy will work over time. Even if the animal doesn’t visibly respond, the energy will still reach them if they need it. - Observe the Animal’s Behaviour
Pay attention to how the animal reacts. If they become calm, lie down, or stay nearby, they are likely receiving the Reiki. If they move away, become restless, or seem agitated, respect their space and stop. They may not be ready, and that’s okay. - Nature as a Whole
You don’t have to focus on just one animal. Reiki can be sent to entire ecosystems—forests, oceans, rivers, and fields—supporting all beings within them. Visualize the land, water, and creatures thriving in harmony as you send healing energy. - Start with the Animals Around You
You can begin by sending Reiki to the birds in your trees, the fox that roams at night, the bees buzzing in your garden, or even the worms in the soil. Every effort counts. Small acts of connection with the wildlife around you strengthen your practice and deepen your bond with nature. - Let the Animal Guide the Session
If you are working near a wild animal, allow them to dictate the session length. They may stay still and receive Reiki, or they may wander off or engage in another activity. If they move away, trust that they have taken what they need. - Don’t Carry the Worry of the World
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the suffering of wildlife due to habitat loss, climate change, and human impact. But you are not responsible for fixing everything. Trust that every bit of Reiki sent contributes to healing, and focus on what you can do rather than what you cannot.
