What is grounding and why is it important for Reiki & Energy healers?
“To ground is to pour our energies back into the earth and feel the warm calm nature entering your body in exchange.”
In a noisy busy world, it is easy to get a bit lost and overwhelmed – lost in your thoughts or emotions or caught up in a big decision or situation. In these moments we need to find a way back to the present moment – and the process of grounding is a simple yet very powerful way to bring ourselves back to the reality and safety of the present. Reiki Practitioners and other energy workers use grounding techniques to end an energy session, as leaving ourselves plugged into higher spiritual energy vibrations can leave us open and more sensitive to picking up on the negative emotions and energies around us. If you learn Reiki you will be taught about the importance of grounding to emotional healing.
More and more these grounding techniques are being used to help relieve stress and anxiety, and as a tool to quickly bring you back to the here and now to calm the mind and our emotions. But what is grounding and how can it help?
What is Grounding or Earthing?
Grounding or ‘being grounded’ is about centring yourself back in the reality of your physical body in time and space. It’s about bringing your awareness back to the here and now – to the present moment by focusing on what is physically happening to your body. In this present moment all we have to do is be. In the present moment we don’t have to worry about the past or the future, only the now. And when we focus on the physical senses we can pull ourselves out of our busy minds and thought patterns into the more tangible physical world.
Grounding exercises bring the focus back to the present but also focus on literally reconnecting ourselves with the ground or Earth – to the floor beneath our feet – our connection to the stabilising energies of Mother Earth. This process of Earthing involves direct skin contact with the surface of the earth, which is brimming with natural energy and free electrons. When we consciously walk and connect with the ground we receive a beautiful little energy boost, complements of Mother Earth.
By centering and aligning oneself with the Earth’s energy, and allowing it to flow through the body, we can create a sense of stability, balance, and rootedness.
For energy healers, grounding is important for several reasons.
Why is Grounding Important?
- Stability and Balance: Grounding helps energy healers maintain stability and balance in their own energy systems, which provides a solid foundation for their work. It allows them to stay rooted in the present moment and prevents them from feeling scattered or overwhelmed by the energy they work with. By grounding themselves, healers can establish a strong foundation from which they can effectively facilitate healing energy as they can work from a place of clarity and inner calm.
- Protection and Boundaries: Grounding acts as a form of energetic protection. It helps energy healers establish clear energetic boundaries, shielding them from absorbing or being overwhelmed by negative or excessive energies. It prevents energetic depletion, ensuring that the healer remains in an optimal state to provide healing support. Grounding also helps shield healers from external energetic influences that could interfere with their work. By grounding, healers can release any unwanted energies and maintain their own energetic integrity.
- Enhanced Intuition and Clarity: Grounding can enhance an energy healer’s intuitive abilities and clarity of perception. When grounded, healers are more attuned to their own intuition and can more accurately perceive the energy dynamics of their clients. This allows them to make informed decisions and offer appropriate healing techniques.
- Facilitating Energy Flow: Grounding supports the smooth flow of energy through the healer’s body. By establishing a connection with the Earth’s energy, healers can draw upon its nurturing and revitalizing qualities. This energy can then be channeled through the healer’s own energy system and directed toward their clients, promoting healing, balance, and vitality. This connection to the Earth’s energy field, promotes a sense of vitality, rejuvenation, and overall well-being. It helps balance the body’s electromagnetic field and can support physical healing processes.
- Effective Manifestation: Grounding assists energy healers in grounding their intentions and manifesting their healing goals. By connecting with the Earth’s energy, healers can anchor their intentions into the physical realm, increasing the likelihood of successful healing outcomes.
- Emotional and Mental Stability: Grounding helps energy healers maintain emotional and mental stability during their healing sessions. It anchors them in the present moment and helps prevent them from getting too caught up in the emotional or energetic processes of their clients. This allows them to maintain a calm and centered state, enabling them to provide effective support. Grounding also helps reduce mental chatter and promote focused awareness, enabling healers to be more receptive to subtle energy cues.
How to Ground Yourself as a Reiki Healer?
There are various techniques that energy healers use to ground themselves including:
- Visualization: Energy healers often use visualization techniques to create a mental image that supports grounding. They imagine roots extending from the soles of their feet or the base of their spine and visualizing these roots growing deep into the Earth’s core. This imagery helps establish a solid and stable connection with the Earth’s energy.
- Grounding Cord: A grounding cord is an energetic pathway that allows excess or unwanted energy to flow out of the body and into the Earth. Energy healers imagine or intend a cord extending from the base of their spine or the soles of their feet and attaching securely to a stable object in the Earth, such as a large rock or the Earth’s core. This cord serves as a conduit for releasing energy and maintaining a balanced connection.
- Physical Touch: Physical touch with the Earth can be an effective grounding technique. Energy healers may choose to walk barefoot on natural surfaces like grass, sand, or soil, allowing direct contact between their feet and the Earth. This practice helps establish a direct energetic exchange with the Earth’s energy and enhances the grounding process.
- Breathwork: Conscious breathing techniques are often used for grounding. Energy healers focus on slow, deep, and intentional breaths, emphasizing the exhalation phase to release any stagnant or excess energy. By bringing their attention to the breath and the physical sensations associated with it, healers ground themselves in the present moment and create a sense of stability.
- Nature Connection: Spending time in nature is a powerful grounding technique for energy healers. They may go for a walk in the woods, sit near a tree, or simply immerse themselves in the natural environment. Being in nature allows healers to absorb the Earth’s energy, connect with the elements, and experience a deep sense of grounding through the sights, sounds, and textures of the natural world.
- Physical Movement: Engaging in physical activities like yoga, tai chi, qigong, or dance can be an effective way to ground. These practices combine movement, breathwork, and mindfulness, promoting a harmonious connection between the body, mind, and Earth’s energy. Movement helps release stagnant energy and stimulates the flow of vital life force energy throughout the body.
- Crystals and Stones: Energy healers often use crystals and stones with grounding properties to support their grounding practice. Crystals like hematite, smoky quartz, black tourmaline, and jasper are commonly used for grounding. Healers can hold these stones in their hands, place them on their body, or keep them nearby during a healing session to enhance the grounding effect and provide a sense of stability.
- Intention and Affirmations: Setting a clear intention and using affirmations can reinforce the grounding process. Energy healers may state affirmations such as “I am rooted and connected to the Earth’s energy” or “I release any excess energy and stay grounded in the present moment.” By consciously affirming their grounding intention, healers strengthen their connection with the Earth and align their energy with stability and balance.
These practices help energy healers establish a solid foundation and maintain a balanced energy flow, facilitating their work in promoting healing and well-being. It’s important to note that different energy healers may have their preferred techniques or variations of the ones mentioned above. The choice of grounding technique ultimately depends on the healer’s personal preference and what resonates best with their energy and practice.

Grounding Reiki Meditation
- Find a quiet and comfortable space where you can relax without any distractions. Sit or lie down in a position that feels natural and comfortable to you.
- Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths, allowing yourself to become present in the moment. Feel the weight of your body against the surface beneath you and consciously release any tension you may be holding.
- Begin by bringing your attention to your breath. Take a slow, deep breath in through your nose, allowing your abdomen to rise as you fill your lungs with air. Hold the breath for a moment, and then slowly exhale through your mouth, releasing any tension or stress with each breath out. Continue to breathe deeply and evenly throughout the meditation.
- Visualize roots growing out from the soles of your feet, extending deep into the earth. Imagine these roots reaching down through the layers of soil, rocks, and minerals until they connect with the core of the earth. Feel a sense of stability and support as you anchor yourself firmly to the earth.
- As you continue to breathe, imagine a warm, golden light flowing up from the earth, through the roots, and into your feet. Feel this energy entering your body, grounding and stabilizing you. Allow the energy to rise slowly, moving up through your legs and into your torso.
- As the energy moves upward, envision it expanding into a bright, glowing ball at your solar plexus. This ball of energy represents your personal power and strength. Feel its warmth and radiance as it continues to expand, filling your entire body.
- Take a moment to focus on any areas of tension or discomfort within your body. Imagine the healing energy of Reiki flowing directly to these areas, soothing and releasing any blocked or stagnant energy. Feel the tension melting away as the energy works its magic, restoring balance and harmony within you.
- Now, visualize a vibrant, white light descending from above, entering through the crown of your head. This light represents divine energy, wisdom, and guidance. Feel this light merging with the golden energy in your body, creating a harmonious balance of earth and spirit.
- Take a few moments to bask in the warmth and radiance of this combined energy, feeling grounded, supported, and connected to both the earth and the higher realms. Allow yourself to absorb any insights or messages that may come to you during this time.
- When you are ready, slowly bring your awareness back to your physical body. Wiggle your fingers and toes, gently stretch your limbs, and take a few deep breaths to reorient yourself to the present moment.
- Take a moment to express gratitude for the grounding and healing you have experienced during this meditation. Trust that you can return to this state of grounding whenever you need to feel centered and connected.
Remember, grounding is a practice that can be done regularly to help you stay centered, balanced, and connected to the earth’s energy. Feel free to modify this meditation to suit your own preferences and needs.
