Clear Quartz is a very special crystal in the mineral kingdom. Clear Quartz is truly a special gem within the mineral kingdom. So clear and pure, it feels like a captured breath of air or a frozen drop of mountain spring water. The ancient Greeks actually believed Clear Quartz was ice so deeply frozen it would never thaw. In fact, the word crystal itself comes from the Ancient Greek word κρύσταλλος (krustallos), meaning both “ice” and “rock crystal.”

At first glance, Clear Quartz may seem simple and unassuming. It isn’t as vividly coloured as some of its relatives, lacking the deep, regal mystery of Amethyst or the romantic allure of Rose Quartz. In recent years, Citrine has vied for the spotlight with its strong ties to abundance and manifestation. Yet, despite its famous family members, Clear Quartz has been quietly revered for centuries as the Master Healer – the stone that amplifies, balances, and harmonises all energies, transcending trends to stand as a timeless ally in spiritual and energetic work.

Someone recently asked me, “If you could only own and use one crystal for the rest of your practice, what would it be?” And though it’s nearly impossible to pick just one stone to work with, I do believe Clear Quartz would be right at the top of my list.

But what makes this crystal so remarkable? Why has it captivated people for thousands of years? And how did it earn the title of Master Healer?

Let’s take a closer look at what makes this crystal so special.

The Formation of Clear Quartz

Quartz is one of the most abundant minerals on Earth, making up around 12% of the Earth’s crust by volume. It’s found in an astonishing variety of geological environments, from molten magma deep within the Earth to sedimentary sands shaped by wind and water. Quartz appears in igneous rocks like granite, metamorphic rocks like quartzite, and sedimentary formations such as sandstone.

Clear Quartz is a pure form of crystalline silica, which means it’s made up mainly of silicon dioxide (SiO₂)—a natural compound of silicon and oxygen. This crystal forms deep within the Earth’s crust when silica-rich liquids slowly cool and harden over millions of years. During this process, the silicon and oxygen atoms arrange themselves in a repeating, orderly pattern called a crystal lattice. A mineral with a higher rating can scratch any mineral with a lower rating, but not the other way around.

Because Clear Quartz rates a solid 7, it is durable enough for everyday energetic use and wear. Its sturdiness makes it ideal for many types of jewelry—rings, pendants, bracelets—as well as energetic tools like wands and massage points, without easily scratching or breaking.

In contrast, softer stones like Selenite (around 2 on the scale) require much gentler handling and can even dissolve in water, limiting their practical uses. Clear Quartz’s robust hardness makes it a reliable “workhorse” crystal, trusted for a wide variety of healing practices.
