Reiki and Kindness: Embracing Reiki’s Fifth Principle
The Reiki principles, as taught by Dr. Mikao Usui, provide a profound and guiding philosophy for living a balanced, peaceful life. The fifth principle, “Just for today: I will be kind to every living being,” beautifully encapsulates the power of kindness in the Reiki tradition.

This principle encourages us to embrace compassion not only toward ourselves but toward all living beings. It’s a reminder that kindness is an essential aspect of healing—both for the person offering it and for the one receiving it.
But why is kindness so powerful in the context of Reiki and healing?
Well, have you ever noticed how you feel after doing something nice for someone else? Maybe you helped a friend, donated to a charity, given a heartfelt compliment, or even just smiled at a stranger. When you give your time, energy, or attention selflessly to another person, without expecting anything in return, it feels good—not just for the recipient, but for you as well.
Even witnessing acts of kindness, feels great! I’m sure I’m not the only one who loves to watch videos of good deeds and kindness amongst strangers—a marathon runner stopping to help a struggling competitor, even though it means finishing later; a stranger quietly paying for a family’s meal at a restaurant when they are going through a difficult time; a group of bystanders forming a human chain to rescue a dog stranded in floodwaters. Moments like these remind us of our shared humanity. They make us feel more connected, more hopeful, and more inspired to pass kindness forward.
You get that warm, fuzzy feeling inside because kindness is actually wired into our biology. It triggers a natural response in the body. When we act with kindness or see others acting generously, our bodies reward us with happy neurochemicals that are part of something called the reward pathway.
The Science behind Kindness
When you perform an act of kindness, your brain releases a surge of feel-good chemicals, including:
- ✔ Oxytocin – Known as the “love hormone,” oxytocin promotes bonding, trust, and emotional warmth. It reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, and even strengthens the immune system.
- ✔ Dopamine – This pleasure chemical is part of the brain’s reward system, creating feelings of joy, motivation, and satisfaction.
- ✔ Serotonin – Often called the “happiness chemical,” serotonin helps regulate mood, reduce anxiety, and combat depression.
This chemical cocktail is why we feel uplifted and fulfilled after being kind—it’s a built-in reward system. It’s a built-in evolutionary reward system that encourages us to cooperate, connect, and support one another—because we are biologically designed to take care of each other.
The Heart Behind Kindness
Humans are deeply social creatures. We crave connection and thrive in strong, supportive relationships. That’s why our bodies biologically reinforce acts of kindness—because behaviours that strengthen social bonds lead to longer lifespans, better mental health, and greater overall well-being.
From an evolutionary perspective, kindness promotes group survival. Cooperative groups had a higher chance of thriving, meaning over generations, this innate drive to help one another became hardwired into our nature.
Even our brains reflect this. Scientists have identified a specific region that lights up when we help others—the subgenual anterior cingulate, also known as the “generosity center.” This area is especially active in highly empathic, sensitive individuals—people who feel called to heal, help, and nurture others.
This also explains why seeing acts of cruelty or selfishness can feel so deeply upsetting, particularly for Highly Sensitive People (HSPs). When kindness is missing, it disrupts our natural sense of harmony and connection.
Sadly, community spirit not a big part of modern life for many people. In today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world, it’s easy to overlook the importance of community and human connection. While social media and digital communication allow us to stay in touch, they often create a sense of superficial interaction rather than fostering deep, meaningful relationships. Many people find themselves physically surrounded by others but still feeling isolated or disconnected. This is especially true in urban environments where, despite being in close proximity to large groups of people, true connection and support systems can feel lacking.
Loneliness is a pervasive issue, and studies show that it affects people of all ages, not just the elderly. The rise in mental health concerns, including anxiety and depression, often stems from a lack of community, belonging, and connection to others. In fact, studies have linked loneliness to negative health outcomes, including weakened immune systems, higher blood pressure, and even shorter lifespans. For many, loneliness isn’t just an occasional feeling—it’s an ongoing battle, exacerbated by social isolation and a lack of opportunities to bond in meaningful ways.
As Reiki practitioners, we hold a powerful opportunity to address this growing crisis by being agents of kindness, compassion, and healing in our communities. In a world where many are feeling disconnected, Reiki can serve as a beacon of light, offering an invitation to come together in a space of shared energy, love, and support. As Reiki practitioners, we have a responsibility to spread kindness, not only through our healing sessions but through our everyday actions. Every act of kindness, whether small or large, contributes to a collective shift toward healing and unity. Through our work and energy, we remind people that they are not alone—that they are part of a greater whole, where kindness and connection are always within reach.
In a world where loneliness and disconnection are widespread, we can help counteract these forces by embodying the essence of Reiki: love, compassion, and connection.

How Kindness Enhances Reiki Healing
Kindness plays a crucial role in Reiki because it amplifies the flow of healing energy in multiple ways:
1. Kindness Creates an Open, Receptive Energy Field
Reiki works best when the recipient is relaxed, open, and trusting. Acts of kindness—whether receiving or giving—help create a sense of safety and emotional warmth, which allows Reiki energy to flow more freely.
2. Kindness Raises Your Vibrational Frequency
In energy healing, higher vibrational frequencies are associated with love, peace, and harmony. When we act with kindness, our energetic frequency naturally rises, making it easier for Reiki to balance and heal our energy field.
3. Kindness Helps Release Emotional Blockages
Many emotional imbalances stem from fear, resentment, or trauma. Kindness acts as a powerful antidote, softening emotional wounds and encouraging self-compassion, which is essential for deep healing.
4. Kindness Strengthens the Heart Chakra
The heart chakra, or Anahata, is the energy center associated with love, compassion, and connection. Reiki practitioners often focus on unblocking and balancing this chakra to improve emotional well-being. Practicing kindness is one of the most effective ways to activate and strengthen the heart chakra, leading to deeper self-awareness and inner peace.
Kindness starts with yourself
Sharing kindness with others is important, but we must not forget to nurture ourselves with the same healing compassion and generosity. Self-compassion is the foundation from which all other kindness flows. It’s about being gentle with yourself, accepting your flaws, and forgiving your mistakes, rather than being overly critical or harsh. When you treat yourself with kindness, you nurture your own well-being, and from that place of care and balance, you’re better able to share that positive energy with others.
Practicing self-kindness might look like giving yourself time to rest when you’re tired, not being too hard on yourself when things don’t go perfectly, or celebrating small victories. When you prioritize your own emotional and physical health, you create a space for deeper connections, for both self-love and compassion toward others. This is why Reiki, with its focus on self-healing and self-awareness, aligns so beautifully with the practice of kindness.
It’s a cycle: the more you are kind to yourself, the more you radiate that energy to those around you, creating a ripple effect of love and positivity. 💖
The Ripple Effect: How Kindness Spreads Healing
Reiki teaches that we are all connected, and kindness is one of the most powerful ways to strengthen that connection. Each act of kindness creates a ripple effect, spreading positive energy far beyond what we can see.
💫 When you are kind to yourself, you heal yourself.
💫 When you are kind to others, you heal them.
💫 When kindness is practiced collectively, we heal the world.
By embracing Reiki’s fifth principle, “Just for today: I will be kind to every living being,” you’re not just adopting a mindset—you’re becoming an active participant in global healing.
Reiki teaches us that our energy is interwoven with everyone and everything around us, and acts of kindness are one of the most powerful ways we can influence the world. just like energy, kindness never truly disappears. It expands, spreads, and transforms the energy of a situation or a relationship. Whether it’s a small, seemingly insignificant action or a grand, life-changing gesture, kindness creates waves that reverberate far beyond our immediate surroundings, touching lives and hearts we may never directly encounter. By practicing kindness, we become conscious participants in a web of positive energy that can heal, restore, and unite.
I love the thought that there are people in the world who will never forget your acts of kindness—sometimes, even strangers remember you fondly because of the simple gestures you offered when they needed it most. You never truly know what someone is going through, and that’s why kindness is so powerful. A small act of compassion can have a lasting impact, shifting someone’s perspective or brightening their day in ways you may never see.
Never underestimate the power of your kindness. As Aesop wisely said, “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” Your kindness may be the light that helps someone find their way out of a dark moment, and it can ripple through the world in ways beyond your imagination.
Kindness it’s a biological, emotional, and spiritual force that supports healing on every level.
So, just for today—be kind. 💖
